History of Sugar Lumps and Sachets

The first paper sheets destinated to the packaging of sugar were invented by two French (Loïc de Combourg, 7 rue Léo Delibes - Paris - and François de la Tourrasse, 3, avenue Montespan - Paris) who file for registration their invention at 13.00 hours on January 24, 1908 in front of the Commercial Chamber of "Siene" with the following formula:

  • N° 105460 - marque ASEPT
  • N° 105461 - SUCRE - POCHETTE.

Loïc de Combourg e François de la Tourrasse founded also the company "Société Nouvelle de Sucre en pochette et de Publicité" (New Sugar Sachet and Advertisement Company) with headquarters in Paris which occupies with the evolution and development of this invention.

On July 26, 1909 the company deposited for registration a new packaging trademark to protect their innovations identifying it with the following denominations:

  • N° 115229 - definition of the trademark "ASEPT"
  • N° 115230 - definition of the term "SUCRE POCHETTE" (Sugar Sachet)
  • N° 115231 a 115234 - "Identifying trademarks for the sugar "cut in lumps", protected by a paper packaging or a cardboard one that varies in color and description.".

The following numbers refer to the deposit of different amounts of lumps contained in the packaging::

  • N° 115231 - 4 pieces of sugar

  • N° 115232 - 3 pieces
  •
N° 115233 - 2 pieces

  • N° 115234 - 1 piece

  • N° 115235 identifies a whole system of opening and closing used for packages containing sugar and made of a kind of "seal" with various colors.

The Company received a silver medal at the Hygienic Exhibition in Paris 1908, an important major prize in 1909 and gained an incredible commercial success. It became a jury member in 1910.

Another precursor of the cardboard packaging of sugar:

The First Sachets

On May 17, 1909 Ernest Picard (8 rue Giaffreda, Nice) files for registration an industrial trademark as a special shell destinated to contain "hygienic sugar in sachet of different units, protected from flies and powder microbs" - the sugar sachet was born.
With the war of 1914 appeared another generation of package with the purpose to ration sugar.
These fairs are, in fact, the monthly rations of 750 g, 500 g and 250 g per person.

Between February 21, 1917 and January 12, 1918 some restaurants produced sachets containing powdered sugar with the insignia: "ne gaspillez pas le sucre" and "ration pour une tasse".

In Germany the packaging of sugar started in 1930 with the invention and production of small cardboard pyramids with a crystallized sugar inside. It was enough to rip the bottom of the pyramid to poar its content inside a cup.

In Italy, where the sugar sachet started to circle after the Second World War, the first collectors appeared around 1968.
